Positive Behavior Intervention & Support

This year (2018-19) Sequoia Elementary School will be implementing a new behavior support program called PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support). PBIS is a proactive approach to establishing the behavioral expectations and social culture needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional, and academic success. Attention is focused on creating and sustaining primary (school-wide), secondary (classroom), and tertiary (individual) systems of support that improve lifestyle results (personal, health, social, family, work, and recreation) for all students. Sequoia Elementary will be focusing on three clear behavioral and social expectations school wide:
  1. Take Responsibility
  2. Always Kind
  3. Respect Others

We will be replacing the “student of character” award with our new PBIS program, which includes a new Positive Behaviors Incentive System called “Star Bucks” slips. School-wide incentives encourage and praise positive behaviors that follow our school rules and our S.T.A.R. mission statement. Students will be awarded Star Bucks by staff members for making wise choices and displaying leadership skills. Students can redeem their Star Bucks for various prizes at our Star Store, or accumulate them for bigger incentives.
Mt. Diablo Unified School District has started to implement PBIS in most schools and grade levels throughout the district. Sequoia Elementary School hopes to increase consistency in understanding behavioral expectations across staff, students, and parents.
